The Promised Child represents the joyous innocent power of the reborn Sun of Winter; the beginnings of life, endless possibilities yet to be understood, explored, or fullfilled. His are all the possibilities of the New Year, and his potential will never be greater than at this moment. All avenues are yet open to him.
Pan represents the sexually active, physically mature man, in that phase of life where he is exploring the world around him, roaming free, and without ties. He is the primal energy of male sexuality, unfettered and unabashed; shaping all he encounters to meet his needs, he has no care, either good or ill, for those who do not wish to share his joyous romp with life.
Herne, the Hunter, represents a strong, passionate and powerful man, whose passions are turned toward other ends than sexuality, and who allows those passions free reign to lead him where they will. He is single-minded in his pursuit of his chosen goal and his responsibilities as he understands them.
The Lord of the Dance is the embodiment of the mature and joyous sexuality and sensuality that is to be found within a joining of two hearts and bodies. The music of his dance beats within us, and weaves us together in desire and passion compounded of creativity, love and joy. He approaches his partners always as his equals, and seeks to share and build a life together out of love. His own loving strength is so great that he seeks a partner with the same inner fire and strength of passion.
Dionysus represents the mature man who gives of himself to meet his responsibilities and nurture his dependents. He creates the security on which the peace of the family depends, nurturing by acting as provider. He cycles with the seasons, falling into a rest period of inactivity after each burst of effort only to rise again with the turning of the wheel. His strength is the greatest of all at its height, for he gives all of himself, keeping nothing in reserve but instead allowing the ebb time to renew him.
The Myrddin is Counselor, Guide, Teacher and Shaman. He represents Age, and Wisdom, and the End of the Life Cycle. It is his job to sort out the lessons Time has taught, and put them into words to pass on to others. He must find the essence of wisdom to preserve it from generation to generation. His are the greater teachings, of Ages, and Histories, and the larger cycles of Man and life outside the daily routines.
The Green Man represents the Earth embodied as Father, and Teacher to those who would learn its ways; he is the Unity of all Life, and the essence of his teachings is that Life is to be lived - no more, no less. He has neither malice nor compassion, providing for all equally, without further aiding those lacking the sense to make use of his bounties.
