The Tools of the Craft
The Tools of the Craft represent the elements we use to shape ourselves and our world. They may be raw forces harnessed by the efforts of our hands or will, or those things which are purely of our own creation.
Cauldron
The Cauldron is the tool used to create brews and stews, to change ourselves and nurture our need to fill the emptiness within. This card represents the ability to change our own internal state, from empty to full, or through the use of knowledge and the gifts of the earth.
Wand
The Wand is used to direct the Will, giving a focus through which to channel our own personal energies with the power of the Mind. This card represents the use of the Mind to direct the Will toward a goal.
Athame
The Athame, or ritual blade, is used to focus the Will, dividing that which is outside the Circle from that which is within. This card represents the ability to divide and separate one element from another, even within what is seemingly a single indivisible whole. This includes the power to sever ties binding us to people or times no longer appropriate.
Chalice
The Chalice is used to contain the liquid elements within the ritual. This card represents the ability to contain and channel the powers of Emotion, and to control those Emotions with which we are filled.
Cakes
Cakes are used in the ritual to nourish the body, and to symbolize the willing sacrifice made by the God who gives his life to the land each year to nourish us. This card represents sacrifice to meet the needs of another, and gratitude for those sacrifices others have made for us.
Wine
Wine has the power to relax us, and make us merry, and is used in ritual to remind us that the God sacrifices himself each year not only to feed the needs of our bodies, but to grant us happiness and joy in life. This card represents joyous acceptance of sacrifice, rejoicing in gifts given and the sharing of further joys with others, rather than repaying sacrifice with sacrifice.
